Taking in the various Resort shows, I noticed a trend I’ve been seeing more and more of over the past few months: python. But not the real stuff—there was that, too, of course, but I’m talking python prints, which give the luxe look at cut cost (though in the case of Lanvin et al., that’s all relative, of course). Those prints even let Stella McCartney, fashion’s loudest animal activist, get in on the style without skinning a soul. The print seems to have a particular hold on summer dressing: Both Michael Kors and Lanvin offered python swimwear, and Alber Elbaz even created an entire ensemble to go with it—a long dress that’d be a perfect cover-up, plus a matching nylon bag and carry-on. Click here for our roundup of serpentine chic, from Stella’s day dresses to Tumi’s wheeled luggage.

The fashion-and-style scene has its share of celebrity goers-and-comers. But one that we’ve been noticing of late—maybe because, well, we didn’t peg him as the type—is rubbery comedian Jim Carrey. He cut a small but decided swath through fashion week and attended the dinner and after-party for Marchesa’s Spring ‘11 collection. (Here he is above, meeting Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, with husband Harvey Weinstein, as Rachel Zoe looks on.) He then got spotted by the fashion crowd at Tuesday’s Shakira concert at Madison Square Garden. (Several editors, including Style.com’s beauty editor, were on hand to see the Colombian pop star perform to celebrate the launch of her fragrance—though none were seen to take cell phone video of the performance, as Carrey did.) And last night, Carrey rubbed elbows with the hordes of Brazilian bombshells—Gisele and Fernanda Motta among them—at the after-party for the Brazil Foundation gala at the Boom Boom Room.

What gives? To be honest, we’re not sure. According to IMDB, he’s currently developing a film adaptation of Where’s Waldo?—maybe he’s researching striped clothing. (Two words in that case, Jim: Saint James.) Pet detectives, if you’ve got any more clues, feel free to leave them below.

Before last September, the name Emilia Wickstead was one of those slightly privileged pieces of information passed around amongst the chic set—including Samantha Cameron—in Belgravia, Chelsea and other tony London nabes. But during this past London fashion week, the 28 year-old Central Saint Martins grad went from quietly doing made-to-measure in her three floor atelier on Cadogan Place to a ready-to-wear debut in a full runway show.

“It was one of the most stressful things I’ve ever done,” said Wickstead last week over a breakfast of eggs and soldiers at Café Cluny. And this is from a girl who recently not only designed her own gown for her Tuscan wedding—photographed by British Vogue for its November issue—but also custom-designed ten different dresses for her ten bridesmaids. Stress aside, with an exclusive at Matches for her Spring collection, and a late of meetings with stores in New York to lay the groundwork for next Fall, things chez Wickstead are off to a promising start.

Now that edgy London’s much more of a lady’s town (see Erdem, Saunders, Ilincic, Katrantzou), Wickstead’s unadorned brand of elegance fits right in. Still, her clean-lined pieces like sharply pleated skirts and dresses and lantern-sleeved tops and crisp tailored pants aren’t stuffy. Rather they have a delicate but cool romance that recalls Chloé. You can also detect a hint of American and Italian sportswear that’s evidence of Wickstead’s transcontinental resume which includes stints at Proenza Schouler, Narciso Rodriguez, and Giorgio Armani. Fittingly, Wickstead reports that more than half of her client base is made up of New Yorkers, among them ex-pats Elizabeth Saltzman and Lillian von Stauffenberg. For them, she’ll still be running up custom dresses made by her in-house machinists and patternmakers. The ready-to-wear, however, will impressively be made in Italy. “I use Prada’s pleaters,” says Wickstead. Consider our ears perked.

—Matthew Schneier

Kate Middleton wed Prince William this morning in what you’d have to describe as a fairy-tale wedding—and wearing what you’d have to describe as a fairy-tale dress. (More on the dress here.) In that, industry insiders say, she did a notch better than her predecessor at the last royal wedding of this size, Princess Diana. “The idea behind Diana’s was kind of fairy-tale, but the reality was more nightmare,” said Vanity Fair’s Michael Roberts, reached by phone in Paris, “because when that dress emerged from the coach it was completely crumpled, there was just too much fabric. Whereas this was not too much fabric and manageable.”

The white and ivory dress, in satin gazar, was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, reportedly in consultation with Middleton herself. Roberts, like all the experts we surveyed, was complimentary—”I thought she looked great,” he said. “Karl Lagerfeld was commentating [on French TV], and he’s a very severe critic normally, but he was taken by it,” Roberts added. “Very elegant. He was impressed by the amount of work behind it—and on the behind.”

Was the dress very McQueen? Opinions differed. “I think it had much more to do with traditional royal dressing than with McQueen, frankly. I think it had not very much of him, at all,” Roberts said. But Barneys creative ambassador at large Simon Doonan, a fellow Brit, caught a glimpse of the late designer in it. “McQueen had a great interest in history,” he said. “This is a dress that’s created through the lens of history rather than through the lens of Hollywood. It somehow resonates a bit with Elizabeth I, because of the tight bodice. It was heavenly.” And English stylist Annabel Tollman conceded that while it wasn’t the most McQueen-ish creation in the world, nor could it be. “It’s McQueen doing royal wedding,” she said. “It’s not runway. But can you imagine if it had [been]? It would not have been a great start. The fashion industry would love it, but…this is not the Grand Palais. It’s Royalty. You don’t really want her turning up in look 12.”

Whether or not the dress screams Lee McQueen’s own name, all were glad with the bride’s choice. “I met Sarah Burton at a reception at 10 Downing Street, during the last fashion week,” Doonan remembered. “She told me all about the process of taking over, and how reticent she was, and how scary it was for her to step into Alexander’s shoes…it’s wonderful to see her put center stage like this. It’s like when Isabel Toledo did the inauguration outfit, seeing somebody really great who had a certain humility but was very creative put center stage.”

(Would McQueen himself have been pleased? “He’d find it kind of amusing that he’s been accepted by the establishment,” Roberts thought. “This plus the Met—I think that he’s kind of laughing at them down there, or wherever he is.”)

Much has been made of Middleton as a fashion icon in the making. Does the princess’ canny choice signal another step in that direction? Maybe—and then again, maybe not. Roberts was skeptical. “I think she can be made into a fashion icon by being talked up as such by the press, but if you are in London at all and have any idea what London girls look like, she pretty much conforms to a whole chunk of Sloane-y girls who look almost identical to her,” he said. Doonan, for his part, noted one area where Middleton might be influential. “Her natural bosom looks so fabulous in that dress, I think she’s going to become such an instant style icon,” he said. “I’m wondering if she’s going to depopularize the trend for fake boobs, because her natural bosom looks so perfect in this dress. I think maybe a lot of girls might reconsider that boob job.”

Tollman picked a less likely candidate for her style icon: her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. “I love the Queen,” she said. “Head-to-toe one color, basically been wearing the same thing for the past 70 years. That’s her. Who else can pull off head-to-toe single shade?”

So, I stumbled on this $4.80 find from Forever 21. It comes in lovely dark stones as well as multi-jeweled tone stones. The black and gray are a nice subtle touch, and if I take care of the sparkle up there, I can stay simple on the neck and the ears. I also like the fact that you can wear glitter and stones and shine all year round as well as all hours of the day.

Last night I had a craving for a holiday-inspired, blingy headband. Something cute and flashy — but not silly — like a little hat with a veil. I mean, those are sweet but probably best for a poodle or a toddler?

PRODUCT DETAILS
- Wide satin covered headband with a dual row of plastic jewels
- .75″ band width, 13.5″ length
- One size fits most
- 100 percent polyester
- Imported

Style.com’s Fashion Feed brings you the best of the news around the Web and on Twitter, and ranks the most-discussed designers, labels, models, and celebrities. In our weekly series, we call out the top five designers of the previous week (with our handy gloss on the hows and whys).

1. Alexander McQueen (pictured; last week: 3)
The appointment of Pina Ferlisi as the creative director of McQ made headlines last week. Meanwhile, many saw echoes of the man’s own work in Comme de Garçons’ Spring ‘11 menswear collection, which was heavy on the skull motifs McQueen often employed.

2. Marc Jacobs (last week: 5)
It was a big LV week: There was the strong showing from Jacobs and his lieutenant, Paul Helbers, for Louis Vuitton’s Spring ‘11 menswear collection, as well as the announcement of the new LV women’s campaign, starring Christy Turlington, Karen Elson, and Natalia Vodianova.

3. Stella McCartney (last week: 1)
Stella’s presumably staying off the courts herself—she’s currently pregnant with baby no. 4—but that didn’t stop her from outfitting the Danish tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki for Wimbledon.

4. Diane von Furstenberg
DvF added “hotelier” to her already long list of titles with the opening of suites she guest-designed at London’s Claridge’s Hotel. Pals Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna stopped by to check them out…

5. Victoria Beckham
…as did Victoria Beckham, who reportedly postponed a vacation to do so.

Simply throw a coat over the dress, slip into a pair of nude heels, and you’re ready to go! Besides the vibrant red, the dress also comes in navy and burnt orange.

The red is a perfect contrast to this season’s camel and black saturation. And I love the little military buttons.
